Gary has set the magazine bar at a high level,as always the sequel should be better but not as good as.
To follow the example of ‘The Angry Corrie’,a hill walking fanzine set up in the late 80’s early 90’s,and issued on a sporadic nature.
A couple of issues were sent out to various hill walkers and outdoor shops, they photocopied them and sold them on to recoop the cost of photocopies and make some club funds.

So if the magazine was published but only allowed to be accessed by paid up club members, they could then copy the magazine, and ask the local LBS,tri shop, running shop if they would sell it,for a nominal fee say £1,they(the shop) could keep some percentage of the money, the club member would keep enough to start to recoup their £10,and possibly a small percentage to Charity say ,Team Laws.

Only an idea, this would also give access to an untapped market to try and bring the sport to new people, also the member selling the mag on could stick in local races/reviews,and trainig rides.
Just a thought.

it is an interesting idea, jon, and without wanting to put the knockers it the mag is currently electronic only and doesn’t factor the cost of actual printing. if we want to actually press the thing then the cost of that needs to be worked out.

i might be able to find out what my other half’s mag costs to press, but to give you an idea of the sort of situation they are in – her mag costs £3.50 every 2mo, the print run is about 250, has very little colour (4 or 8 pages per issue) and is probably 1/3 advertising.

you are dead right about how we use content though; we have a pool of people producing great stuff. we should work out the best way to use it in a variety of forms and make it relevant to as many people as possible.

i also agree that the mag should work with the regions where possible, either with a page for each one or an interchangeable depending on where you are based. i’ll be chasing the regional leaders for stuff, but only once i’ve worked out what i want from them.

none of this has answered shadowone1’s original question though. what if the mag was released earlier to members, or a ‘taster’ (smaller) version was released to the general public?

My plan: put some stuff together, get the templates of gary. Play till I get bored, then send what I have to Gary, Ris. They can then add or subtract from it. I’ll let Ris/Gary have the final say.

Hopefully, we can bounce things around til we have an issue.

My apologies as I may have lost something in translation(note to self do not become a diplomat).
There is no need to go to a specialist printers.
Each club member could print off the magazine themseves and then take them to the relevant outlets, using their own or works printer.
The only outlay would be paper and cartridge ink and costs could be recouped by the seller.Similar to the way that the Big Issue is sold.

that’s possible, but it does affect the output. i’m fairly sure that if you want a mag style spine-staple then you will need to re-organise the mag so that it prints the pages to be assembled in the correct order, double-sided on A3.

it’s not a major thing but it would mean there are 2 versions of the mag to output – an A4 readable version and an A3 printable version.

if you print the readable one, double-sided on A4, then it can only really be stapled through the front(if that makes sense), which would reduce how good it looks and affect readability. i’m sure people here have printed it to read it, so any feedback on that would be great.

i didn’t know the BI did it that way, i’ll look into how they do it in more detail to see if they have some tricks so that we can do the same.

The BI,I believe sell the copies to the vender for,it used to be 50p or a quid and then the vender sells the mag to the public for £2,so getting an income dependant on the sales number, rather than a set wage, encouraging self reliance.
It might have changed thou’,since it first started. The whole basis is well worked out, they must be licensed and work on set pitches, not allowed to beg for extra cash or sell for more than the cover price.
But I digress again.

My view is this – the time/trouble it would take to print it off (however you want to do that) V cash regained would be minimal. Unless it was a nice glossy magazine, I know I wouldn’t pay £2 for some laser printed jobby stapled together.

The most convenient way is for people to download it, and somehow pay a nominal fee. Also being online it retians its premium ‘magazine’ look.

I posted the 1st mag on Tri Talk, and the download went from 100 or so to nearly 500.

Ris is on the case, the problem isn’t content or lack of – but the huge amount of time it took Gazza to design and produce, time he hasn’t got. I’m sure he’ll help Ris out, but the mag is not a revenue stream for the club and if everyone joins it will be funded by the club membership in 2011. So its just this year to get everything off the ground.

Actually – I’ve just thought of something. Everyone carry on I’ll get back to you. All hail Ris!
