Rookie Training Days

Rookie training days are geared towards one thing, telling you what you need to know to put your mind at ease.  Rather than try and cover a little bit of everything you could possibly need to know about triathlon in one day, we simply concentrate on the things that matter to you.  There are 2 Rookie Training days, each one concentrating on different things, but each have definite outcomes by the end of the day that you’ll be able to do.

Just because you’re a rookie doesn’t mean the advice has to come from just anybody, the coaches for the day are former British Triathlon champion Rick Kiddle (www.rickkiddle.com) , bestselling triathlon author Darren Roberts (www.peakperformancefitness.org), multiple Ironman World Championship finisher Chris Clarke and Jenson Button’s trainer John Brame (www.rgactive.com).  Rick is one of the UK’s top coaches with a formidable coaching CV and highly successful series of DVD’s.

The Rookie days are located here

Long Distance Rookie Training Day

Long Distance Rookie training days are geared towards one thing, telling you what you need to know to put your mind at ease.  When it comes to longer distance triathlon, the one thing your mind is definitely not at is ‘ease’…!

Who are these days for?

This day are aimed at anyone who has already entered or is thinking of entering a long distance triathlon, which is half ironman distance upwards.  If you’re an uber fit 10 hour Ironman then it is unlikely you’ll pick anything up on these training days, but you never know!

However if your goal is to simply finish the race by crossing the line, rather than finishing the race walking around in circles at an aid station talking to yourself – then this day is ideal for you.   We must stress that everyone getting the most out of the day is our priority, which is why they are limited to 10 people per day to maximise coaching time.

  3. Race nutrition – Long distance nutrition and how it differs from short course
  4. Swim, bike and run strategy – planning your race
  5. Different training methods and rationale – who is saying what, and why
  6. Long distance transitions – how they differ
  7. Survival strategies for when things go wrong

Other things covered on the day

  • Personal first hand accounts from previous long distance rookies
  • Which race to enter – is there such a thing as a ‘rookie’ friendly race?
  • Race day programme and basic rules, how it differs from short course
  • FAQ’s – your questions answered on anything!

What do I need?

Just bring everything with you that you would take to a race and if you have a turbo bring it with you to set your bike up on.  If you don’t have a turbo let us know and we’ll provide one.

Ensure you come armed with plenty of questions, please challenge the coaches as much as possible.  We’ll do everything we can to make sure the dark art of long distance triathlon isn’t quite as mysterious once we’ve finished the day, but please ask as many questions as possible.

Light refreshments are provided on the days, but you’ll need to bring your own lunches and snacks with you.

What to expect on the day

This is a no pressure environment and the focus is learning practically in a relaxed and fun way.  You’ll be amongst like minded people all there for the same reason.  The day can also be lead by you to a certain degree, there is flexibility in the day to respond to things that come up, if there’s time to cover it and everyone else agrees – we’ll do it.

Each attendee will receive a high quality Reebok trainer bag with useful triathlon related products inside, various spot prizes from our partners will also be given out at the end of the day!

Physical requirements

You don’t need to be an uber fit triathlete, just make sure you’re in good health.  If you’re injured in any way just let the coaches know when you arrive.

There is a significant open water element – if you’ve never swam in open water before we strongly recommend you undergo some basic open water swim training or attend ‘Rookie Training Day 1’ which can be booked  direct with Darren (conehead) and contains a basic open water swim course.

Bike Maintenance Day

Spend the day at Bridgtown Cycles learning all you need to know about bike maintenance.   Its impossible to list everything you’ll learn on this day, but below are some key headings;

This will be a full day, by the end of which you will know all you’ll ever need to know about keeping your bike in race condition and minor repairs so you don’t have to take it to your LBS.
